President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau.
The announcement was made during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, marking President Tinubu’s first official engagement within the African continent since taking office on May 29, 2023.
Expressing his commitment to upholding democratic principles, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of taking democracy seriously, acknowledging its challenges while affirming it as the optimal form of governance.
“We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the best form of government.”
