The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, has reportedly resigned from his position.
Daily Trust newspaper reports that Mr Adamu resigned on Sunday night.
He had also told the newspaper that he would not speak on his purported resignation until President Bola Tinubu returned from Kenya where the president is attending the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
“I won’t talk about the issue because the president is away,” Mr Adamu was quoted as saying.
However, the newspaper reported Monday morning that the APC chairman submitted his letter of resignation to Femi Gbajabiamila, the chief of staff to the president, quoting credible sources.
When contacted, APC spokesperson Felix Morka did not confirm nor deny the report.
“I cannot confirm anything at the moment,” Mr Morka told PREMIUM TIMES via phone on Monday morning.
This newspaper could not reach Mr Gbajabiamila as calls to his mobile telephone did not connect.
Other APC sources that PREMIUM TIMES contacted on Monday morning could not also confirm Mr Adamu’s resignation.
Mr Adamu was a senator representing Nasarawa West before his emergence as thruling party’s national chairmanty last year.
He also served as the Nasarawa State governor between 1999 and 2007.
He emerged the National Chairman of the APC in March 2022.
Adamu’s battles
PREMIUM TIMES reported that Mr Adamu distanced the NWC from the choice of the principal officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives, saying their appointment was coming to him as a “rumour.”
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the names of the new principal officers of their respective chambers at the resumption of plenary on 4 July.
However, Mr Adamu, accompanied by the National Secretary of the party, Iyiola Omisore, visited Mr Tinubu the following day during which they resolved the “rift.” Until Mr Tinubu emerged the presidential candidate of the APC, Mr Adamu and some members of the NWC did not support his ambition. They backed the then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who came fourth in the party’s presidential primary on 8 June, 2022.
Meanwhile, some members of the NWC have been running battles with Mr Adamu whom they accused of running the party as a one-man show.
For instance, Salihu Lukman, the national vice chairman(North-west) of the party, had repeatedly called for the removal of Messrs Adamu and Omisore.
He accused the duo of violating the constitution of the party and operating an opaque financial system and at some point took legal action against the NWC.
